the comfort of doing the same thing every day

most of my days look the same. same route, same hours, same food, same music, same desk. i used to think that was something to fix.

there's a lot around you saying a good life should look varied. new places, new people, something worth posting. by that standard a repeated day is a wasted one.

but the repetition is doing something. when the small stuff is already decided, there's more of me left for the parts i care about. the routine isn't the life. it's what makes room for it.

i notice it most when the routine breaks. one week off schedule and everything gets harder, not because the week was bad, but because i'm spending energy on decisions i normally never have to make.

there's also comfort in knowing what's coming. not excitement. comfort. those aren't the same thing, and i think we're taught to want the first one and feel a little embarrassed about the second.

the same walk, the same songs, the same meal at the same hour. it sounds boring written down. living it is quiet, and quiet is fine.

it's easy to mix up routine with being stuck. being stuck is repeating a day you don't want. routine is repeating a day that works while you slowly change inside it.

and you do change. the days look identical from the outside, but you're not the same person doing them. the work gets a bit better. you get a bit better. it just doesn't announce itself day to day.

i'm not chasing a more interesting week. i'd rather have a week i don't have to think about, and spend the thinking somewhere else.
